Keerai Masiyal - Spinach

      Greens need to be a regular side dish in your everyday cooking. Keerai Masiyal is very easy to prepare and is a tasty dish made with very few ingredients.

      Ingredients

      • 1 Teaspoon Pepper powder
      • 1/2 Teaspoon Turmeric powder
      • 8-10 Cloves of garlic, Chopped finely
      • 2 Green chillies, Slit
      • 5 Cups Chopped spinach, (or 2 small frozen packets of spinach)
      • Salt to taste

      For flavour infusion (tempering)

      • 2 Tablespoons Coconut oil
      • 1 Tablespoon Urad dhal
      • 1 Tablespoon Mustard seeds
      • 1 Tablespoon Cumin seeds
      • 2 Dry red chillies

      Method

      • 1)

        In a heavy bottomed vessel add oil and all the tempering ingredients.

      • 2)

        Once the mustard seeds splutter, add the turmeric and pepper powder in the oil and mix for a few seconds.

      • 3)

        Add the green chillies and chopped garlic and sauté until the garlic gets a slightly brown color, if you overcook it, it will give a bitter taste.

      • 4)

        Add the spinach and salt and cover and cook for 15 minutes on medium flame.

      • 5)

        You can serve this with rice, Indian Bread (naan, chappati) or tortillas.

      Tip

      You can substitute olive oil or any vegetable oil for coconut oil.
